Chapter 8 – Voice Control

Introduction

Thanks for your interest in the Abra kick-off training about the accessibility of apps. My name is Paul van Workum and I am working in the field of app accessibility.

Voice Control

With Voice Control it is possible to control an app with only your voice. A grid appears on the screen with various numbers and labels. By pronouncing these numbers and labels, you can make decisions.

Activation

You should go to ‘Settings’, then ‘Accessibility’ to find ‘Voice Access’ on Android. Follow to same path to find ‘Voice Control’ on iOS.

Speed

It is an easy way to navigate an app, almost as fast as with touch. Voice Control is mainly used by people with a motor impairment. For users that can speak, it is way faster than Switch Control.

Demonstration

Let me show you how Voice Control works. Let’s go to the ScreenReader app on iOS.

(PAUL OPENS THE SCREENREADER APP ON HIS IPOD)

Scroll down.

(VOICE CONTROL SCROLLS DOWN)

Show names.

(VOICE CONTROL SHOWS NAMES FOR ALL ITEMS ON THE SCREEN)

This ‘names’ can be used to check if everything is correctly labeled when testing an app.

Show numbers.

(VOICE CONTROL SHOWS NUMBERS FOR ALL ITEMS ON THE SCREEN)

Press 4.

(VOICE CONTROL PRESSES THE ITEM WITH NUMBER 4, THE GESTURES TAB)

Turn up the volume.

(VOICE CONTROL INCREASES THE VOLUME OF THE DEVICE)

If you do not know what options you have just say: ‘Show me what to say.’

Voice Control is a breakthrough feature for people dependent on switch control.
